New Netflix Action Movie Scores Biggest 2023 Opening With Massive Numbers

Jennifer Lopez's new action movie scores Netflix's biggest opening weekend of the year with massive viewing numbers for the streaming service.

The Mother

The Mother scores Netflix's biggest opening weekend of 2023. Released on the streaming service this past Mother’s Day weekend, the action-thriller stars Jennifer Lopez as an unnamed assassin known only as "the Mother" who reemerges after years of hiding to rescue her daughter after abandoning her years ago. Alongside Lopez, The Mother cast also includes Joseph Fiennes, Lucy Paez, Omari Hardwick, Paul Raci, Gael García Bernal, and Edie Falco. The role returns Lopez to her action roots which, despite the mixed reviews, appears to be paying early dividends for the star.

After premiering May 12 on Netflix, the Lopez-starrer has scored the streaming service's biggest opening weekend for a film in 2023 to date. According to Variety, The Mother received 83.71 million viewing hours during the May 8 to 14 window with nearly 43 million total views. It also ranked as the top movie in 82 different countries. On the television side, a Bridgerton spinoff kept its crown with Queen Charlotte as Netflix's top-ranked show.

Jennifer Lopez's Recent Streaming Success Continues

Jennifer Lopez's Recent Streaming Success Continues

Ever since Lopez garnered Oscar buzz for her performance in 2019's Hustlers, her acting career has found a new life on multiple streaming services. This includes the romantic-comedy Marry Me, which was released simultaneously in theaters and on Peacock and became the service's most-streamed day-and-date title in its short history. Her next

movie was another romantic-comedy, Shotgun Wedding, this one with an action twist and a Prime Video release. According to Nielsen data, the streaming service saw its largest monthly usage increase in January, the month of the movie's release.

Lopez is now back with another streaming hit, The Mother, which reconnects her with her action roots after garnering a reputation as an action hero with Money Train, Anaconda, and Enough. Though The Mother is full of frustratingly familiar genre stereotypes and lacks any real innovation, it does provide a refreshing opportunity to see Lopez back in an action role and, just like the aforementioned titles, does provide some popcorn entertainment.
